INNOVATORS WORKING FOR INNOVATORS, ALL AROUND THE WORLD
“MoFo” … Seriously?
In the 1970s, when teletype was used to send overseas cables, the firm purposely chose “mofo” as our teletype address. The nickname stuck, and we later decided to use it as our web address. In many ways, the MoFo nickname is an affectionate reminder that while we are very serious about our clients’ work, we don’t take ourselves too seriously.
Who We Represent
Our clients include Fortune 100 companies, leading technology and life sciences companies, and some of the largest financial institutions worldwide, from Walmart, to SoftBank to Sony Music Entertainment. We also represent investment funds and startup companies, supporting many in their growth and development as major industry players and household brands.

Litigation, Trials + Appeals
At Morrison & Foerster, we believe in doing everything possible to avoid litigation. But if it comes to a fight, fight we will. Our 400+ litigators include leading practitioners in intellectual property, securities, commercial litigation, antitrust, white-collar criminal defense, product liability, class actions, unfair competition, financial services, trade secrets, privacy, and employment litigation. Our litigation bench includes 120 lawyers with first-chair trial experience, along with seven lawyers who are fellows of the American College of Trial Lawyers and four lawyers who are members of the American Board of Trial Advocates—two of the most prestigious trial organizations in the United States.
U.S. News & World Report/Best Lawyers 2018 “Best Law Firms” rankings put us in the Top Tier across the United States in 10 litigation practice areas. In 2018, Chambers Asia-Pacific ranked us in the Top Tier in Japan for Dispute Resolution and Intellectual Property.
Morrison & Foerster’s Intellectual Property practice is the work of an interdepartmental group of lawyers focusing on patent, trademark, copyright, trade secret, unfair competition, technology transactions, licensing, and related intellectual property matters. The firm has one of the largest intellectual property practices of any general practice firm—with more than 300 lawyers stationed in major financial centers in the United States, Asia, and Europe—and represents the most innovative companies and recognizable brands in the world.
The firm’s attorneys have played a significant role in the creation and protection of many of the landmark patent portfolios in the high-tech, life sciences, chemistry, and consumer products industries. Morrison & Foerster continues to be ranked highly in legal directories, including Chambers and Legal 500.
Regulatory + Enforcement
Morrison & Foerster helps clients identify and assess risk and solve regulatory and enforcement challenges internationally and at every level of U.S. government. Our regulatory and enforcement practices include antitrust and competition law, communications, energy, the environment, financial services, government contracts, land use and natural resources, privacy and data security, securities, and transportation.
In many cases where our lawyers have represented clients before the SEC, FINRA, and other state and federal agencies, regulators have closed their investigations with no action having been taken against our clients. Many of the attorneys in the Securities Litigation, Enforcement, and White Collar Defense Group served as SEC enforcement attorneys or as federal or state prosecutors before joining the firm. Members contribute to MoFo ReEnforcement: The Enforcement Blog, which provides insights into regulatory and enforcement developments affecting the financial services industry, and The BD/IA Regulator, a blog focusing on the securities industry.
Morrison & Foerster advises U.S. clients on the tax implications of a wide range of transactions on the local, state, and federal level. We also counsel international clients on U.S. federal income tax law, including tax controversy, investment funds and financial products, and cross-border transactions including mergers, acquisitions, and joint ventures. Our practitioners also advise companies, boards, and individuals on compensation and benefits issues, with particular experience in the context of transactions, and assist with ERISA-prohibited transaction issues.
Law360 named us the 2013 Tax Practice Group of the Year.
